Even though job-related expenses are not deductible on your Federal return due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, you will need to enter those expenses as part of your Federal return so that the information can transfer to your state return if your state did not conform to the Federal law and still allows the deduction.

Use the following steps to get started:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “2106” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 2106
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 2106” link

As you go through this section of your return, notice that there will be a question about whether you purchased tools for your job that are expected to last one year or more.  Entering your information in this section will depreciate the cost of your tools.  If you continue further, then you will see a section to enter the cost for tools expected to last less than one year.

Information flows from the federal return to the state return.  You can enter those expenses on your federal return and then watch for the proper section when you start working on state if you are in one of these states

AL, AR, CA, HI, MN, NY or PA.
