For the purpose of signing your electronic return, you can reuse your Self-Select PIN from last year or create a new one to use, it doesn’t matter which option you choose.

You create your own Self-Select PIN. You do not register the PIN with the IRS before filing or need to contact the IRS to get it. The five-digit PIN can be any five digits except all zeros.

The PIN number was a random number that you chose last year and is not kept in our system. Only you have access to that number. The IRS is asking for your last year's Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) in lieu of that PIN number.

You can use last year's AGI. The original AGI is the amount from your prior year originally filed return as accepted by IRS. The amount can be located on:

  • Form 1040 - Line 38
  • Form 1040A - Line 21
  • Form 1040EZ - Line 4

Do not enter a corrected amount or the amount from an amended tax return.

You can retrieve your filing PIN here: https://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Electronic-Filing-PIN-Request

If you don't remember your 5 digit PINa, you do have another option moving forward. The Self-Select PIN is a random 5-digit number that you enter as your electronic signature when e-filing your return. You can reuse your Self-Select PIN from last year or enter your AGI from last year's tax return.

For identification purposes, you need to enter either last year’s Self-Select PIN or your AGI. The IRS requires your AGI for identity verification. Please read the TurboTax Help link, listed below, to learn how to locate your AGI.

Turbo Tax is making me enter BOTH the AGI from last year and the PIN (saying I can make one up) but I can't just make one up because the IRS is rejecting the return because the PIN doesn't match what I used last year.  Why is Turbo Tax making me enter both things instead of just letting me use AGI from last year's return?

@ixo

Please do not confuse your 5-digit PIN from last year with your 5-digit PIN for next year.

When entering AGI or PIN from last year to authenticate yourself, you should use one and clear the field for the other (but both can be entered if both are matching in the IRS database).

After that, you can select a new PIN for next time. Make a note of it.

Then, TRANSMIT.

You won't be able to find your 5 digit code in TurboTax as we don't store it. If you don't remember it you can use your AGI instead. Please see this TurboTax FAQ to find your AGI: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/how-do-i-find-last-year-s-agi/00/25947

This was OK for TY 2020 but not for TY 2021.  Now you must provide both the AGI and the 5 digit code from last year, even if last year you did not use a code.

Your self-select PIN from 2018 is a personal number that is not kept in our system. Only you would have access to this number. To verify your identity for e-filing, you’ll need to use last year’s adjusted gross income (AGI)

Note: The e-filing PIN isn’t the same thing as the Self Select PIN or the IP PIN
