how does turbo tax free edtion ask about head of household filing?

It has nothing to do with which version of the software you are using. If you start off by filing Single or married filing separately and claim a qualified dependent, you might be offered the filing status of Head of Household. You must have a qualified dependent in order to file as HOH.

What is a "qualifying person" for Head of Household?

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

Enter Personal Info here (Head of Household):

Open your return (if not already open).
Enter "head of household" in the Search box.
Click on "jump to head of household" link.
Make sure that you indicated that you are not married and that your dependent information has been added,
If true, answer that you paid more than half the cost of to keep up your home (this will allow you to file Head of Household).
