Question

How do I correct Box 15 on my W-2?

I am a military reservist. I moved from MA to SC four years ago. Despite my gov’t record showing my SC address in every area, my W-2 always has MA listed in Box 15 of my military W-2. I have submitted numerous requests to multiple military pay offices have this corrected, to no avail. I know this is an issue for many other members of the military, too. Any suggestion on how I may get this corrected and possibly even recoup the taxes I’ve erroneously had to pay to MA for the past four years?

Updating your address on your W-2 is not the same as changing your State of Legal Residence (SLR) for tax withholding. To stop MA from appearing on future W-2s, you must submit:

  1. DD Form 2058 (State of Legal Residence Certificate): This is the official document that tells the military to stop withholding for State A and start for State B.
  2. SC-W4: South Carolina's withholding allowance certificate.
  3. Action: Submit these to your unit's RPAC or Finance Office. If they say "it's already updated," point to Box 15 on your latest W-2 as proof that it is not updated in the payroll system.
