Have you entered a qualified dependent?   It cannot be a GF or BF.

    Am I Head of Household?

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

To claim head of household you will need to make sure you meet all the requirements set by the IRS.  The IRS states, "Generally, to qualify for head of household filing status, you must be able to claim a qualifying child or qualifying relative as a dependent. However, a custodial parent may be eligible to claim head of household filing status based on a child even if the custodial parent released a claim to exemption for the child."

The requirements for head of household are:

    • pay over half of the expenses for the household
    • be considered unmarried at the end of the tax year
    • have a qualifying child or dependent

TurboTax will help you choose the right filing status for your return.  To determine your filing status you will follow these steps:

    1. Login to TurboTax
    2. Click the down arrow next to about me
    3. Click the edit next to about me
    4. verify interview questions are answered correctly

I am having the same issue, my daughter is 18, a full time HS student, lived with me the whole year, is unmarried and did not pay her own living expenses. I am letting her other parent claim her this year but I should still qualify as head of household. Turbo Tax will not let me choose HOH filing status

You have answered something incorrectly in the dependent interview.   TurboTax will automatically apply the Head of Household status if you qualify.   You will qualify once you enter a qualifying dependent.   All you need to do is enter your marital status and a qualifying dependent.   Go back to the My Info section and revisit your marital status and follow-up questions, and then go back through the dependent interview, carefully.

As the custodial parent, you can give the non-custodial parent a Form 8332 so they can claim the child and take the Child Tax Credit.  The ability to qualify for Earned Income Credit, Head of Household, and the Dependent Care Credit, always stays with the custodial parent and can't be waived, shared, or transferred.  @horneric
