How come I had to pay to file the taxes when I got it done before 3/15?

The free state was for those that were using the TurboTax Free Edition/AbsoluteZero version only and filing before March 15th, 2018 at 11:59pm PST. You can see that here Absolute Zero (which includes a free state return) has ended as well.
It looks like you are posting from TurboTax Deluxe and state is additional in that paid version of the software. If you go here https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/ and look under all other versions it lists State additional and if you click that, it shows pricing for state with those versions.
