Question

How can I tell if I’ve already filed a W-2? I have saved all from throughout the years. I know theres one I didn’t file but I’m not sure how to tell which one. Any help?

A company I worked for had been bought out, which I received two W-2 forms. Received the 2nd one after I already filed so figured I’d just wait till the following year. But now I’m not sure which one(s) I need to file.

Each W2 is supposed to be reported for the year you earned the income.  You cannot combine them in future years.  Meaning, you cannot save a W2 from 2021 and include it on your 2022 tax return.

You can check what years you filed taxes by getting your IRS transcript.  This will tell you if there was a year you did not file and if you add up your W2's for each year you will be able to compare it with what the IRS has to see if you reported all of your income for that year.

And.....look at the W-2's carefully.   The year is printed on them.  They show the year the income was paid to you.
