To add your middle initial to your Massachusetts state return signature in TurboTax, you must update your information in the Federal section first. Because state returns "pull" their data from your federal entry, the state signature name is generally locked to whatever name you used at the beginning of the return.

  1. Go to the My Info (or Personal Info) tab on the left-hand menu.
  2. Select Edit next to your name. Ensure your first name is in the First Name box and your middle initial is in the Middle Initial box.
  3. After saving, go to the State Taxes tab. If the signature still doesn't reflect the change, you may need to delete the Massachusetts state return entirely and restart it to force the software to re-pull your updated federal name.
  4. During the final File section, when you reach the "Consent to e-file your Massachusetts return" screen, type your name exactly as it appears in the display text directly above the signature box, including the middle initial and exact capitalization.
