H4 EAD, SSN, 1099 job

Hi there,

I am on H4 EAD. I have an SSN and started working the last year 2021 October.  I now have three 1099 jobs.

My question is: previously I had ITIN and my husband (H1-B with W2) filed taxes. I am planning to do married jointly. Is this the correct choice? I also read that as an Independent contractor we must report income quarterly. Does that mean I have to file taxes quarterly? If so, is it possible to be done with married jointly?

I know I am naive in this. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you in advance for your time.

Yes, you may choose to file a joint return with your husband.

After you received your SSN after previously using an ITIN, stop using your ITIN. Use your SSN instead.

Taxes must be paid as you earn or receive income during the year, either through withholding or estimated tax payments. Your 1099 forms report the amount of self-employment income paid by the issuers. You need to make estimated tax payments. Estimated tax is used to pay not only income tax but other taxes such as self-employment tax.

Consequences of  not paying enough estimated taxes:

  • You may be charged a penalty.
  • You also may be charged a penalty if your estimated tax payments are late, even if you are due a refund when you file your tax return.

Here are the payment due dates:

You can pay all of your estimated tax by April 18, 2022, or in four equal amounts by the dates shown below:

  • 1st payment .................... April 18, 2022
  • 2nd payment....................June 15, 2022
  • 3rd payment....................Sept. 15, 2022
  • 4th payment.....................Jan. 17, 2023*

        * You don't have to make the payment due January 17, 2023, if you file your 2022 tax return by January 31, 2023, and pay the entire balance due with your return.
