If you received a penalty notice from the CA FTB, the first thing to do is read it carefully. The notice will tell you what the penalty is for and how to respond. Common reasons for penalties include filing or paying late or underpaying taxes.

Here are your options:

  • If the penalty is correct, pay it by the due date shown on the notice to avoid additional interest.
  • If you have a good reason for the late filing or payment (like a serious illness, natural disaster, or financial hardship), you can request a waiver by filing FTB Form 2917. You'll need to explain why you had reasonable cause.
  • If you've had a clean tax record with California, you may qualify for a one-time penalty removal. You can request it by filing FTB Form 2918 or by calling the FTB at 1-800-689-4776.
  • If you believe the penalty was issued in error, you can contact CA FTB in writing and explain why you disagree with the penalty.
