will there be a software update that doesnt show form 8911 as being retired?

A software update will be available once the IRS has finalized the Form 8911 for tax year 2022. There is no estimated date when this will be accomplished. Usually the IRS will have updated forms and schedules available from late December thorough the end of February.

Are you looking at the 2022 TurboTax software that just came out today? The early releases of any tax software for the new year are really just a rough draft. A lot of things aren't included yet, and a lot of things haven't been updated yet from the previous year. There will be many updates between now and the end of January. You won't be able to file your 2022 tax return until sometime in January anyway. The IRS hasn't even announced a date when filing for 2022 will start.
