Question

For HOH filing status, if you're not taking the qualifying relative as an exemption, how do you enter that into Turbo Tax?

I'm looking for the mechanics of how you actually enter this into Turbo Tax.  If the qualifying relative is a dependent which he is, HOH is fine and I get the exemption.  I don't want the extra exemption.  What do I need to do to not get the exemption for the qualifying relative while still maintaining my HOH status?

Are you divorced from the other parent?  Are you signing a form 8332 so that you and the other parent can each get some child-related credits?  What are you trying to do?

There is no way to file HOH without a qualifying dependent or relative.

To file as head of household, you must:

  • Pay for more than half of the household expenses
  • Be considered unmarried for the tax year, and
  • You must have a qualifying child or dependent.
