Electronic Withdrawal of VA state tax

I'm curious if this is a fluke or a flaw in the Turbo Tax system.

For 2026, we had a tax amount due to Virginia. I elected to have the amount electronically withdrawn from our bank account on the due date, which is May 1. When I checked our bank account this morning (May 2), I noticed that the tax payment was not withdrawn. I had to make the payment online, which because the payment is now a day late, will probably incur penalty, and interest. The VA return was accepted, and when I went into my account with VA, there wasn't any issue with the return, so I don't know why the payment was not withdrawn. We have not owed VA tax for a long time, so this is the first time that we are using the electronic withdrawal option.

Does the electronic withdrawal information not get transferred to VA along with the return? Is this an issue with VA (I have also contacted them)? Has anyone else had this problem with their VA taxes being withdrawn timely? If this option does not work, why offer it? I'm very frustrated with Turbo Tax right now, and would like some clarification.

I don't instruct payments as part of e-file but when I make payments to VA online directly it usually takes a couple of business days to hit my bank (whereas IRS will debit next business day very promptly). I paid Q1 ES on 4/30 and it still hasn't been withdrawn, I expect it to hit Monday. But they record it as of the date the transaction was scheduled.

So as long as the instructions on your return were correct, it's possible the electronic withdrawal from your return is just delayed - so you could end up double paying if you also paid it directly on the website.
