Dropping support for WIndows 10 for Turbotax 2025

Hello to the corporate big wigs:

I have been a loyal user of Turbo Tax software for past 28 years and have introduced this software to umpteen number of colleagues, clients and friends. Over this period of time I feel that the product is becoming more expensive and not as user friendly. Specifically, they dropped support for Windows 7 a few years ago and next year they are planning to stop supporting Windows 10.  Also now we are forced to set up an account with Intuit before we can even activate a purchased copy of the software. This is not acceptable.

Not sure what is prompting the above actions. But forcing us to buy new PCs just to use TurboTax is not going to work. At best it will drive long-time customers away.

I would appreciate hearing from the Corporate crowd to address this issue, if they are listening.

Thanks

Edsd

Does anyone know if H&R Block tax software will work next year on Windows 10?  I could see millions of people moving en masse from Turbotax.

I thought I'd found the answer but my search for H&R Block 2025 was just directed to a generic "buy TaxCut" page. H&R should seize the opportunity to make their product much more popular.

I have zero interest in buying a new computer that's infested with AI, hoovering up every keystroke and webpage I visit.

Dropping Win10 support is not acceptable. As a IT Security Professional, using security as the excuse is just nonsense. Additionally, Microsoft has already made extended support available.    This decision needs to change!!

Windows 11 can be installed on a non compliant computer: 24H2 for newer models and 23H2 for older ones.

In the Sources folder on the Windows 11 install disc, use   -  setpprep /product server - to install

This complete BS! Windows is providing support for Win 10 for at least another year if you pay.
I have been using TurboTax for a very long time. I am not looking forward to finding new tax software but you leave me no choice.
    Disgusted is an understatement.

I sympathize, as I am in the same boat--a nice compact form PC with solid state drive, loads of memory, but operating on Windows 10.  As it was purchased in 2020, it likely has the TPM 2.0 CPU.

I do find the logic of Intuit's recent message to customers definitively stating that a downloadable version of TurboTax will not be sold for use with Windows 10 operating systems, due to MS' failure to support Windows 10 with security updates.  In point of fact, MS has agreed to support Windows 10 users with security fixes on payment of a $30 fee post-October 15, 2025 for another year.  I suspect that further extensions will continue for a while.

One would speculate that the real reason for Intuit's decision is that the company does not wish to expend the money to tweak the software to recognize "security updated" Windows 10 software during the download process.  That is, is this a PC/laptop using Windows 10 subject to the MS ESA (with security updates) or not?  Given how many software changes must be made in the code every single year, due to the copious number of tax law revisions in the federal and state governments, I do perceive the inability of the Intuit coders to develop a software tweak to identify a Windows 10 ESA operating system vs. a Windows 10 w/o security fixes to be specious and unconvincing.

In any case, for my part, after using Intuit's downloadable software (TT Premier) for six consecutive years, I will move to the H & R Block equivalent in 2025.  My tax situation implicates investment in gas & oil MLP's, foreign stock equity dividends, etc., which require access to the "forms" review function to correct errors created by the "questions" approach to completion of the forms.  TT Online does not offer "forms" review and modification function, so departing from TurboTax next year is a no-brainer for me; I am not paying a couple grand for a new machine, just to be able to use TurboTax.

I don't know about you guys. But I think anybody switching to the online version of TurboTax is crazy. I've been involved in a few data breaches. Does anybody on this forum realize that if TurboTax gets breached when you do it online hackers have a whole lot of information about you. I would never ever ever consider doing my taxes online and giving all that information to somebody to hold for me. That's why I use the desktop version version. And until I get another computer I might use TurboTax again but probably not if they want to pull this stuff and don't extend out their 2025 version for the desktop on windows 10. I still think they could have waited one year and then done the switch.

Agree, the less information you keep on another site - all the better.  Any site can get hacked, we seen it in the past, but many forget.  I had almost 40 years working as a system software tech and I can tell you for sure- I could get to all the data collected in the state.  But , that is from the inside and is not as likely, but does happen.  You need to also be more worried about attacks from outside- even other countries.

People just don't understand what happens between pressing enter and your screen is refreshed.  Lots of places to get your data and that is in addition to hacking directly into a company data site.

I am not a corporate user, but I have been buying TurboTax Premium for 21 years.  I would be forced to buy a new computer to run windows 11 so that I could use TurboTax 2025.  I will be switching to a competing tax preparation software product instead (H&R).

Have you seen any evidence anywhere that 2025 HRB  is planning to install on Windows 10?

This is wrong. My laptop will not support Windows 11. And I do not want my taxes online on your server. It should be my choice, whether or not I want to buy a new computer and update to Windows 11 or not. It should not affect my ability to do my taxes on my laptop. Is there an opt out option whereby I can still have a desktop product from turbotax?

Not unless Turbo Tax changes and lets 2025 be installed on windows 10.  How to contact Turbo Tax

I also completed the form to contact the office of the pres. Got a phone call within hours and a follow up email. Email stated in part "this decision was made to ensure we continue providing the highest level of protection for our customers’ sensitive financial information" The individual who called kept talking about how Microsoft was going to stop the security updates for Win10. I pointed out that Microsoft was going to provide 3 avenues for continued support and if Microsoft could determine who opted in to one of those options surly Intuit could and allow installations on supported computers. As you can see from their response, they weren't listening. That said, I think we should all complete the contact form anyway - remember when they wanted to discontinue It's Deductible?

I plan to upgrade to Windows 11.  After the upgrade will my TT 2024 desktop still run on the new version of windows?

@MICKEY79    Yes.  All my programs back to and including 2019 open and run.  I did have a problem getting 2024 to update.   So ended up having to reinstall 2024.   Here are my notes.

6/12/25 I updated my Windows 10 to Windows 11. Had trouble getting Turbo Tax 2024 updates (my 2023 program updated ok). Got error 1603. My Windows was updated. Tried lots of things, turning off A/V, restarting many times, clearing cache & cookies, updating Windows, etc. Got stuck with MS Net Framework. I seem to have Net 6 under Program Files (x86) instead of Net Framework 4.8. So I finally decided to uninstall TT and reinstall. Went to Settings-Apps-TurboTax 2024 and uninstalled.

6/15/25 Sunday. Logged into my Intuit Account - Products and downloaded 2024 again
    Windows_PC_TurboTax_Download (2).exe 409,926 kb. My first download was 1/3/2025 363,627 kb

Installed it. It never asked for my License Code or to download my state. After it installed, it didn't automatically start so I clicked on the Desktop Icon to start. It asked me if I wanted to update. I did and it only updated California (to release 5/8/25). I think the new download had the current federal updates. All my returns were listed and opened.

I couldn't agree more.  I am the family's system administrator and have supported my husband's use of Turbo Tax for over 40 years now.  We are terribly disappointed at Turbo Tax forcing us to get a new computer with Windows 11.  He is very happy with his Windows 10 computer and everything works on it.  I am positive many of our apps and peripherals will NOT work on Windows 11.  Turbo Tax, your requirement is an excellent way to drive customers away including us!  If consumers can continue to use Win10 by paying Microsoft a fee for a year, why not change your policy about Turbo Tax on the desktop.

    @Bob S5

I think H&R Block is the only other Tax software that has the desktop option.

Correction - Tax Act also has a download option but expensive

I do not believe the offer a CD any more. Download only.

This year price will also be an issue. Turbotax whether online or desktop has gotten expensive for someone is retired.

I will probably use them or for the the first time use a service like FreeTaxUSA that saves to the "cloud".

As of now a State return only cost about $15.00. Federal is free. But, if you want other services they charge a fee.

    As of now.

I have enjoyed using TurboTax since 1994. I like my tax information to be private and so will not use an online version. I will get extended support for Windows 10 which is very inexpensive ($30 or 1000 Microsoft points). If Intuit sticks with this plan, I will unfortunately have to switch to another program.

With the latest Windows 10 update I was offered Win 10 support thru October 2026 free of charge. One click and done. I sincerely hope Intuit gets the message and rescinds their tragic decision to discontinue desktop TT beginning with the 2025 tax year.  If not, I guess it's back to paper forms for me.

Sounds great but how does that work? My Win 10 updates automatically.  If you've got a link to free Win 10 support, I'd consider us buddies for life!

I can't stand TurboTax!!!  They are the most expensive software that I ever have to purchase because you only use it once.  Now, they have dropped ItsDeductible and are ending support for Windows 10.  They are the only reason that I have ever had to upgrade a computer.  Time for H&R Block!

Note the following!!  Re Windows 11 new version 25H2 coming soon.

Upgrading from Windows 10, or versions of Windows 11 prior to 24H2 requires upgrading to 24H2 first, then upgrading again to 25H2. Happy upgrading !! (Re the Hack - currently unknown until I get it. Will only be able to Hack to the 23H2 or 24H2 and prevented from 25H2?)
