My wife died in 2023 and I had only 1200/month income other than SS. Do I need to file?

If this is your only income in 2023 there is no need to file a 2023 tax return.

Unless you also received a Form 1095-A for your health insurance through one of the State Marketplace Exchanges or from healthcare.gov then you must file a tax return.

Remember that you can still file a joint return with your late wife for 2023, so if you choose to do that you need to factor in any income she might have had before her passing.

why do you not want to file?

You should file a final tax return for your deceased spouse.

That could be a joint tax return.

See IRS Free File to find software that will not charge you if your AGI is within the limits.

You will still file as married filing jointly for 2023. Did your wife have any income in 2023 before she died?

You also must file a tax return if you took money out of a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Medical Savings Account (MSA).

You can use the calculator at the following link on the IRS web site to see if you have to file a tax return.
