Each tax year is separate and you need to use the software and forms for the specific tax year. You cannot use 2020 software to prepare a 2021 tax return. You need 2021 software for a 2021 return.

To do what? You need to buy the 2021 program to do a 2021 return. Yes you have to buy a new return each year. It is only good for that year.
