can i file my taxes on my own even if i live with my parents and am not in school

Yes, but make sure that your parents didn't claim you as a dependent.  If you have income to report, you may want to file for an extension.

 

This will extend the time you have to file your taxes until October 15th, 2026.   

  1. On the left rail menu in TurboTax Online Select Tax Tools  (You may have to scroll down on the left rail menu.)
  2. On the drop-down select Tools 
  3. On the Pop-up menu titled “Tools Center,” select File an extension
  4. Follow the instructions to start the extension process 
  5. You may be asked to file a return!
    1. Continue through this.  
    2. The extension will be filled, and your return will not.

Also, you may have to file your state taxes:

Remember, an extension gives you more time to prepare your taxes, but it doesn't extend the time to pay your taxes.  If you know you will have to pay taxes, you should pay them by the original due date of the tax return. This will avoid extra interest and penalties.
