Question

can I claim a 22 year old as a dependent: she was 5+ months as a student: after that we paid her apartment rent for 3 months so we provided all her support for 8 months

So the full details: We provided full support for her through August: tuition and rent from her 529 plan so she could do school and student teaching full time during spring semester. She got a teaching job starting in August/September so we helped her get an apartment and covered rent and most of her expenses (groceries, furniture, etc) until her first paycheck in September. So we provided more than 50% of her support for the year But she didn't live with us for more than 6 months She "lived with us" as a student for those 5 ish months of spring semester but not June, July, August

If she is not related to you by blood, you cannot claim her as a dependent because she did not satisfy all the following conditions:

  1. The person can't be your qualifying child or the qualifying child of any other taxpayer.
  2. The person must live with you  all year as a member of your household (and your relationship must not violate local laws). For exceptions to this requirement, see this TurboTax article.
  3. The person's gross income for the year 2025 must be less than $5,200.
  4. You must provide more than half of the person's total support for the year.
  5. The person is a U.S. citizen, U.S. resident alien, U.S. national.
  6. The person is not a married person who files a joint return unless that joint return is filed only to claim a refund of withheld income tax or estimated tax paid.
