Here are screenshots of the problem assuming your only income is FEI (General Category FSI), where Albania FEI = 54,222 and Algeria FEI = 81,333. 135,555 total FEI is entered on Form 2555, resulting in a FEIE of 130,000. If "Taxpayer's" is selected in the "Income Excluded on Form 2555 Smart Worksheet", then both the post-exclusion FSI (1116 Line 1a) and pre-exclusion FSI (1116 Line 3d) are incorrect: If a correction is applied to 1116 Line 1a via the FTC Computation Worksheet, then Line 1a is fixed but Line 3d still incorrectly duplicates the total FEIE: Unlinking Form 2555 from 1116 is not a solution, because there is no other way to get the FEIE amount into 1116 Line 3d: The only solution is to manually override 1116 Line 3d (which then correctly apportions the standard deduction between the two countries based on their ratio of pre-exclusion gross FSI): @MarilynG1

@loveharry988 Hard to answer completely , since you haven't indicated what state you filing. ____________ Most states start with the Federal AGI, and only subtract eligible SS, or 1099-R income later in the state form. For instance, if a state doesn't tax SS, a state will only subtract the $$ that were included in Fed income in the first place......so if line 6b on your Fed form 1040 is a zero, then there is nothing to subtract from state income for that, since nothing was included in the first place. For 1099-R income that might not be taxed by a state...usually there is a question following the main 1099-R form in the federal area asking what the source of the 1099-R form...and the user has to select the pension type that might exempt it....that varies by state for a Military pension....it might specify Military...or it might just indicate US Govt (which military is), or sometimes just Public pension. PA varies on this and doesn't ask about it until you get into the state Q&A. But, then, I don't know all states, and when/where they all ask about Military pension $$ to get them excluded.....just the general procedure for most/many/some??

@davesh Virtually everyone can edit them .......(though, Desktop software users do have to run the most recent software updates.) If you are still having trouble...delete that 1099-R form and re-enter it manually. Don't upload a picture or PDF file (those commonly go wrong) . If you can't import it directly from a financial provider....use the manual entry procedure...."Enter Another Way"......and...."Type it in Myself"

For most states software, the deduction is made right after you enter the 1099-R in the Federal section. But for PA software, the $$ are included in PA income until you've filled out the entire Federal section, then when starting thru the PA software, it will then ask you about the source of the various 1099-R forms you may have entered...you will be able to select a PA public pension type at that time. Only then will the $$ be deducted from PA income.

I made typical contributions to a pre tax IRA which is not included in Schedule 2. I didn't get a 1099R because there were no withdrawals.

The medical insurance part of your auto insurance will be asked about when you prepare your Michigan tax return. You will not enter anything about it on your federal tax return.

When you enter medical expenses in TurboTax, it asks you a whole lot of questions to help you include everything that can be entered. Really what matters in the end is the total of all of it; that is what will go on your tax form, so don't get too frazzled trying to make sure everything is in the "right" category as long as you enter it all, and do not enter anything twice.
If you receive Social Security benefits, your Medicare is deducted from your SS. When you enter the SSA1099 for your Social Security, the amount paid for Medicare flows automatically to the medical expense section of the software, so do not enter it again.
MEDICAL EXPENSES
The medical expense deduction has to meet a rather large threshold before it can affect your return. The amount of medical (including dental, vision, etc.) expenses that will count toward itemization is the amount that is OVER 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. You should only enter the amount that you paid in 2025—do not include any amounts that were covered by insurance or that are still outstanding. Of course, your medical expenses plus your other itemized deductions still have to exceed your standard deduction before you will see a difference in your tax due or refund.
To enter your medical expenses go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Medical>Medical Expenses
2025 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS
SINGLE $15,750 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)
MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $15,750 (65 or older/legally blind +1600)
MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $31,500 (65 or older/legally blind + $1600)
HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $23,625 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)
