When is turbo tax going to update software to waive 1099-R withdrawal penalty for Hurricane Harvey?

Retirement tax questions

The IRS just published the 2017 PDF version of the 8606 form yesterday (2/2/18) that is needed to report that.  The 8606 form refers to the 8606 instructions that the IRS has not published as of yet so there are no instructions as to how to report it.

The IRS must issue the electronic specifications (schema) for the form so companies like TurboTax can program the electronic version of that form, which then must be approved by the IRS, before it can be released.   The estimated release for that form is 2/15, subject to change, depending on how slow the IRS is in approving the forms.

2/15 has now passed, any word on when this might be ready?

Retirement tax questions

I was told they are still waiting on the IRS to accept the form

The 8915 form has been pushed to 3/1.    The latest version of the form on the IRS website is the 2009 version.   Waiting for the 2017 version from the IRS.

@abucsfan The IRS release date for Form 8915, Qualified Hurricane Retirement Plan Distributions, has changed. The new release date: 3/1/18.

Retirement tax questions

I'm not a bit surprised.

Retirement tax questions

That is the date that the IRS is giving.   The official 8915 on the IRS website is the 2009 version.  The IRS has not even released the paper/pdf 2017 8915 yet and the electronic schema specification are usually released by the IRS about 2 weeks after the pdf version.   E-file providers must comply with the IRS schema rules to e-file.

Turbotax better hurry up with their update or they are losing my business.  First was told update ready Feb 15th.  Get with it Turbotax!!!

Retirement tax questions

TurboTax (or any other provider) cannot do anything until the IRS issues the new 8915A and 8915B forms and the e-file specifications for those forms.

Forms 8915A and 8915B  don't even exist yet.  There is a 8915 (the 2009 version) , but no 8915A or 8915B.

Once the pdf versions shows up, the IRS usually issues the e-file version withing 2 weeks.

@abucsfan unfortunately, turbotax isn't what's slowing down this process. The IRS is. They haven't approved the necessary form needed to update through Turbotax concerning Hurricane Harvey. I'm just as frustrated
