Retirement tax questions

If you are able to claim her as a dependent on your tax return, you can claim her medical expenses too.  The amount she can earn for 2015 is $4,000.

Here are some of the basic rules:

  • Have been a citizen or resident of the United States, or a resident of Canada or Mexico.
  • Did not file a joint income tax return with anyone else.
  • Received more than half his or her support from you.
  • Had less than $4,000 of income for the entire year. (Generally that amount does not include Social Security benefits.)

Turbo Tax does an excellent job with determining who qualifies as a dependent.

Where to enter medical expenses in TurboTax:  While inside the software and working on your return, type medical expenses, sch a in the Search at the top of the screen (you may see a magnifying glass there).  There will be a popup that says Jump to medical expenses, sch a.  Select that to get to the general area.
