The 1042S is not supported so you have to enter the parts separately.

For the income:

  1. Go to federal
  2. to Income and Credits
  3. to last section, Less Common Income
  4. bottom selection, Miscellaneous Income
  5. Start
  6. bottom selection, Other Reportable Income
  7. Start
  8. Any Other Taxable Income?
  9. Yes
  10. 1042S income and enter the total of the 2 forms.
  11. Continue
  12. Click the blue Add Another Income Item on the left
  13. Enter  Bangladesh Treaty and the amount as a negative dollar
  14. Continue

If you have other information on the 1042S, it will need to be captured in the sections that match it in similar fashion. If yours is not treaty income, do not enter treaty information.

@AmyC What I don't see very clear here is how do I enter the tax I got withheld in my 1042s. If I only enter the income amount, obviously my tax return goes down, which is not correct because I already paid taxes for that income. Thanks!

Here is how to enter tyour 1042-S

  • Federal
  • Wages and Income
  • Less Common Income
  • Miscellaneous income, 1099-A, 1099-C
  • Other Reportable Income
  • First enter the 1042-S with the amount of the income
  • Then enter it again with the same income as a negative amount

That will report the income without incurring taxes on it.

Here is an example of how it will look:

But if part of this 1042-s income was withheld as tax, how do I make sure I get it back under the appropriate treaty? I had a similar situation during my second year of f1 visa and at that point I got the whole withheld amount back. But it seems to be trickier now that I am a resident alien for tax purposes.

Yes, to report your withholding tax reported on your 1042-S:

  1. Go to federal>deductions and credits
  2. Estimates and other Taxes Paid>other income taxes>start
  3. Scroll down to other income taxes paid in 2022
  4. Withholding not already reported on a W2 or 1099
