Does the free program automatically test tuition and fees against the education credit? In my case, it may be more beneficial to bypass the lifetime learning for tuition.

Education
The program works with the data you enter and selections you make basically, to determine the best credits for you "based on the information you enter in the program". Now some folks do want to skip a credit or change to a different credit for varying reasons. You can do that after you have completed the education section in it's entirety by entering LETME in the search box, and then clicking the "jump to" link when it appears and work it through.

In the TurboTax programs, after you enter your school information, the program will analyze your data and determine the best option which gives you the larger tax break on your tax return ( Among American Opportunity Credit, Lifetime Learning Credit or Tuition and Fees deduction)
However, if you disagree with the program and want to make your own choice, you may do so by following these steps:
After sign into your account, select Pick up where you left off
1. At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in letme and Enter
2. Select the 1st choice on the search results - Jump to letme
3. Follow prompts
