If you did not receive stimulus check 2 and enter $0 into the TurboTax software, it should be offset by the calculation in TurboTax.  If TurboTax is calculating a credit, the information that has been entered into the tax software needs to be updated.

Why do you not qualify for the second stimulus check?

The TurboTax software adds together the entries that you made for receiving stimulus check 1 and stimulus check 2.

Then the software computes the amount of your stimulus check amounts based upon the information that has been entered into the tax software.

If you are due an additional amount, it will be issued as a Rebate Recovery Credit (RRC) on line 30 of the 2020 1040 tax return.

If you believe that the Rebate Recovery Credit (RRC) on line 30 of the 2020 1040 tax return is not correct, then you should:

  • Check the amounts entered for stimulus check 1 and stimulus check 2, and
  • Make sure that you have correctly entered your dependent information.

If there is a difference, it is in one or both of these situations.

In TurboTax Online, you are prompted to input stimulus check 1 and stimulus check 2 information under Review down the left hand side of the screen.

You can also access your stimulus check choices by following these steps:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Across the top of the screen, click on Other Tax Situations.
  • At the screen Let’s keep going to wrap up.  Click on Let’s keep going.
  • At the screen Let’s make sure you got the right stimulus amount, click Continue.
  • At the screen Did you get a stimulus payment? you can update your stimulus check entries.

What is the reason that you are not entitled to the credit?  Once you tell us that, we may be able to help you.

If you do not qualify for a second stimulus, you should not complete the Recovery Rebate Credit  (RRC) Worksheet.  Delete that form and you will not receive a EIP as a result of completing the form.

How to delete the RRC:

Here's the general procedure for viewing the forms list and deleting unwanted forms, schedules, and worksheets in TurboTax Online:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  2. In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  4. Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.

I would not recommend deleting the form unless you know WHY the program is doing what it is doing.

It could mean you entered something incorrectly elsewhere in the program.  Or it could mean you are mistaken and you do qualify for the credit.

I have the same issue.  My wife and I filed separately for 2019, and both of our AGIs were above the max income  to receive a stimulus check for our filing status.  However, I retired and my wife's income dropped at the end of 2019.  We are filing jointly for 2020.  Our joint AGI for 2020 does meet the guidelines to receive all of the Recovery Rebate Credit.

The RRC worksheet is using our 2020 AGI to justify the credit, but, I thought all of these stimulus checks were based on 2019 AGI.  So, am I eligible for the credit?

@orangeandbrew

Yes, you are eligible for the credit.

The "stimulus payments" were a pre-payment of a 2020 tax credit.  Although they based that prepayment on your 2019 taxes, the ACTUAL credit is based on your 2020 income.

At our retirement age, it is hard to understand their logic.  However, I now understand and have revised my 1040 to reflect me receiving the credit.  Thanks for your personal input.  Stay safe and warm!!!   Verner
