Form is asking for Box number information but my UC-1099G doesn't have box numbers anywhere on it

That's OK if your form does not have actual box numbers on it.  Just pay close attention to the descriptions related to the information reported on your form and enter the numbers in the right box based on what the screen is asking.  It is also important that you are in the correct section of TurboTax to enter your unemployment compensation since Form 1099-G can also be used for other things.

Use the following steps to go to the section in TurboTax to enter your unemployment reported on Form 1099-G:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “unemployment” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to unemployment
  • Click on the blue “Jump to unemployment” link to get started

Here are some helpful tips to consider when entering your information.

If you had state taxes withheld from your unemployment, but there is not a state ID number on your form, then use the Federal ID number in box 10b on the screen.

If you did not have any state taxes withheld, then leave all the boxes blank (boxes 10a, 10b, and 11).  This includes the dropdown box for the state name.

If anything is entered in box 10a, 10b, or 11, then all of them must be filled in to avoid an error condition causing you to review the entry.

my 1099G doesn't specify if its tax withheld is federal or state but there is a federal ID number on the form should I leave Box 11 empty?

It is certainly less common to have only state taxes withheld without also having Federal taxes withheld.  If your form only shows one number for tax withholding, it is a reasonable assumption that it is for Federal taxes.  Therefore you can leave box 11 empty, along with boxes 10a and 10b on the input screen.

If you have a payment record or check stub available you may be able to verify that the withholding was for Federal taxes and not state.
