If your itemized deductions in Schedule A are less than your standard deduction, it is more advantageous to opt for the standard deduction and TurboTax will do it for you.
In 2016, standard deductions are:
- $6,300 for Single or Married filing Separately
- $9,300 for Head of Household
- $12,600 for Married filing Jointly
