Amending 2019 taxes
So I've been married since 2011 but I've always filed head of household due to the fact that my husband was always incarcerated in 2019 he came home.. got a job and filed taxes himself so I filed married filing separately... not knowing that you still can file head of household while married under certain circumstances which I found out that I could have file head of household do to my circumstances.. my husband does not live with me and we are no longer together but we are still legally married.. so I want to amend my 2019 taxes and and file head of household that way i can still file head of household next tax season without issues. I heard that if you file married filing separately you will not be allowed to file head of household the following years I believe it's 2 or 3 years so my question is what steps do I take to amend it

You got some incorrect information somewhere or from someone. There is no rule that says you have to wait a few years to file HOH again. If you meet the criteria to file as HOH then that is how you can file. Did you have a qualifying dependent to file HOH for 2019? If so, then amend your 2019 return.

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your filing status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

If you lived apart from your spouse for at least the last six months of 2019 then you could file HOH for 2019, and HOH going forward if you still have a qualifying dependent. That stuff about not being able to file HOH for a few years was wrong.
