Enter the amount of your outstanding mortgage principal on January 1, 2019, if you're doing your 2019 income tax return(s).
Per IRS Form 1098-Mortgage, instructions for Box 2:
- Shows the outstanding principal on the mortgage as of January 1, 2019.
- If the mortgage originated in 2019, shows the mortgage principal as of the date of origination.
- If the recipient/lender acquired the loan in 2019, shows the mortgage principal as of the date of acquisition.

I am preparing my 2022 taxes. My 2022 mortgage interest statement has an outstanding mortgage principal as of 1/1/22 of $0.00. When I try to enter that amount in TurboTax, I am told that there must be a dollar amount not $0.00. The loan was not generated till May, 2022. What do I do?
