State tax filing

If you've already filed last year's federal tax return using TurboTax, you simply need to open last year's program and choose State.  You can then complete your New Jersey return. You can't e-file the state return, but you'll be provided the instructions you'll need for mailing.

If you filed last year's federal return outside of TurboTax, and only need file your New Jersey return, you have a choice:

  • Purchase TurboTax software or TurboTax Online, and re-create your federal return.  You can then prepare your state return using TurboTax.  You won't be able to e-file the return, since state returns can't be e-filed separately.  Please see TurboTax's Prior Year Products page for available options.
  • Access the New Jersey Division of Taxation website and find the appropriate forms.

If you haven't filed either your federal or state returns, please see the TurboTax Help articles How Do I File Back Tax Returns? and File your 2019 taxes for additional guidance.

You have three years from the date the return was filed or two years from the time tax was paid, whichever was later, to claim a refund.
