Did you file your original return before you amended your returns?  Amended returns can only be prepared after your original returns are accepted. Amended return for Federal is 1040X.  State will have a number with the X for their amended form.

If you have not filed your original return & it has been rejected, you cannot amend the return.  You can go back into your return to make the changes then re-e-file.
