Multiple State

My full time residence is Michigan but all my income earned was in CA and VA.  No income earned in MI.  Do I show all the income for MI?  Do I need to file a MI return if I had no income in that state?  To complicate  things while working in VA I lived in W. VA.  Do I need to also file a WVA return even though I had no income there?

Please help.  I have been reading all the previous questions on multi states but I am not sure of what ot do.

State tax filing

File a return if you owe tax, are due a refund, or your AGI exceeds your exemption allowance. You should also file a Michigan return if you file a federal return, even if you do not owe Michigan tax.  This will eliminate unnecessary correspondence from the State of Michigan.  See Michigan Department of the Treasury for more information.

You will have to file Non-Resident Status for both the State of California and the State of Virginia.

Since you did not earn any income in the State of West Virginia, you are not required to file a return with them.

To get add the states into TurboTax follow these steps:

  1. While in your Tax Home,
  2. Select State on the left side of your screen,
  3. Enter your state of residence, Michigan first,
  4. Follow through this section adding California and Virginia.
  5. TurboTax will walk you through each State.
