If I earned zero income in Illinois in 2016, do I need to file taxes in Illinois?

I moved to Illinois in August 2016 and am therefore a part year resident, but all of my income was earned in another state prior to my move.

State tax filing

No, based on the information you shared you are not required to file a part-year tax return for Illinois.

You must file an Illinois part-year return if any of the following are true:

  • You earned income from any source while you were a resident

  • You earned income from Illinois sources while you were not a resident

  • You want a refund of any Illinois Income Tax Withheld
