State tax filing
There may be several reasons why your state refund is larger this year. The following are some suggestions to help you find the difference:
- Review your W-2, Box 17. Double check the amounts you entered into TurboTax to make sure you didn't overstate the state income tax withheld.
- Do a state income tax return line by line comparison to see what is different this year versus last year.
- In 2019, your State Tax Withholding was higher than 2018, for the amount of state taxable income.
- In 2019, you deferred more income into your Employer-Sponsored Retirement Plan or Flexible Savings Plan.
- In 2019, you qualified for a tax credit you didn't receive last year (or the credit amount increased).
- In 2019, you added a dependent.
- If you itemize, your Itemized Deductions are higher in 2019 versus 2018.

Make sure the import from your W-2 has not imported the wrong numbers! Delete the W-2 and import it again, and go through the Review Section again to see if that has fixed your issue.
