If i reside in Florida, but my W-2 says GA,do i have to pay GA state taxes? My payroll checks say Ga state tax is blocked. How do i prepare correctly?

State tax filing

If you physically worked in GA, then your income from that work is taxable by GA - even though you are a FL resident.  In that situation, you would have to file a GA non-resident tax return.

State tax filing

Probably not. Many companies have employees from all over the country.

Generally, a company will assess tax if the employee works in a particular state. If you work in Georgia and live in Florida then you probably will pay tax. If your company is merely located in Georgia but you don't work there, then probably not.

What if my W-2 is issues from Dept of Defense? I’m not a GA resident but they took out state taxes that I’m trying to get back. GA is trying to say All of the DoD earnings are taxable. Is this correct?

If you did not work in Georgia, file a nonresident return and enter zero state income.
