I am a full-time resident of RI, and have been my entire life, but worked for an employer in MA for Jan/Feb 2017. TurboTax is presenting issue with Form 1 NR/PY.

I began work solely in RI for a different employer after having left the first employer. This resulted in my having two separate Forms W-2. I am trying to file a non-resident return in MA for the money earned during that first period in 2017 (when I was working for the MA employer). The ratio of MA earnings to gross earnings between both employers (MA and RI) is ~1:12, with the MA earnings below $8K.

I have entered information for both W-2s accurately, and everything is fine with the Federal and RI resident returns. Everything appears to be correct when I enter the information for the MA return. As each of the two W-2s relates to income earned in only one state or the other, I would think I do not need to apportion income.

According to Mass.gov: "NONRESIDENT APPORTIONMENT WORKSHEET. You cannot apportion Massachusetts wages as shown on Form W-2. Do not use this worksheet if you know the exact amount of your Massachusetts source income."

TurboTax stops me to "fix" the MA return every time I click to continue, and asks that I complete sections of the aforementioned form for both the MA and RI employers. The MA employer indicates "MA" on Line 15, which means it cannot be apportioned (shouldn't need to anyway, as 100% was earned in MA). The RI income is not relevant for this process, but even if it were, entering any amount results in a loop to "fix" it, again. I have tried everything. I am at a loss as to how to proceed, here.

were you located in Mass at any time or did you solely work from a RI company?  Did you telecommute?  I'm a bit confused as to why Mass taxes were withheld when you said you worked in RI. What was in the state boxes for Mass from the employer?
Read rules of Mass for what is considered Mass income.

I live in RI. I worked for two separate companies: one in MA (I physically worked in MA for Jan/Feb 2017), then one in RI (after leaving the job in MA, I worked in RI for remainder of 2017). I have two W-2s (one from each company, with no overlap of income between them).

At no point did I ever live in MA, but since I did earn money in MA (during Jan/Feb when I physically worked in MA), I will need to file a Form 1 NR/PY for MA (as a Non-Resident).

The issue is that TurboTax keeps trying to force me to apportion the income (unnecessary, as I do not need to "estimate" MA income earned because I know EXACTLY what the amount is - ALL income earned on the first W-2, and NONE on the second).
The software will not allow me to file my return without completing the apportionment worksheet (NOT necessary). It seems to be a bug, and I need to get the taxes filed today, as the Free File deadline is end of day.

during the federal personal info interview did you respond that you worked in another state and select Mass?
when you began the RI interview did it ask you to remove possibly double taxed wages?  Example is your company in Mass may have had state taxes for both Mass and RI which you enter as 1 w-2 but TT, needs to confirm that you have to remove the Mass amount.

I appreciate you trying to help, but none of these are the issue. The income for each W-2 was for one state or the other (one earned in MA with only MA taxes withheld, the other earned in RI with only RI taxes withheld). RI is the only state of residence. I completed everything correctly, and have even deleted and re-entered all forms several times over the past couple of days.

Again, thank you for trying to assist. Unfortunately, this appears to be a software bug, and has been reported by the other user who replied.

on the Mass interview you need to allocate FICA taxes, did you enter that?  Contact TT support if that is not the answer.

I've been able to reproduce this and have reported this to the AnswerXchange moderators as a bug. You may be able to print and mail the return despite this error, but probably won't be able to e-file until the issue is fixed.

Thank you, linear. This is ridiculous, considering the timeframe. I guess I'll keep checking back, then. They're going to need to extend the Free File deadline for people in this situation, as there is no reason this should even be happening. This is not a new tax situation; these states don't have reciprocity, and there are a lot of folks in the same boat.

It might be a good idea to contact TT support directly - make sure they know your expectations about Free File.

Thank you so much! I certainly will.

I finally gave up, and used H&R Block's Free File (you can get to it through the irs.gov site). All set in under an hour. Thank you for trying to help.

Sorry this didn't work out in TurboTax for you.
