What is the best way to file state and federal taxes for dual active duty military living in different states (SC and WA) but HOR in 2 other states (OH and WV)?

I live in Washington state, he lives in South Carolina. I claim Ohio as my home of record, he claims West Virginia. We both own a home in North Carolina that we rent, and i own a house in ohio that my mom lives in and i dont profit from. I think we may be too complicated to file this thru turbotax. Any advice on how to file this year is appreciated.

State tax filing

You may want to file a joint federal return and file married filing separate state returns.

The following information will walk you through the process.

Basically you will be preparing a joint federal return with no state returns. This joint federal return is filed with the IRS.

Next you will prepare "mock" married filing separate federal returns for yourself and your spouse.  The "mock" returns are not filed with the IRS, they are used to prepare the separate state returns to be filed with the states.

The following information contains instructions on how to complete the above steps.

It is followed by each state's filing requirements for military personnel.
