State tax filing

You DO NOT need to change the way you file your Federal Tax return.

You can file your FEDERAL tax return together as "Married Filing Jointly".

Only Virginia requires you to file your wife's VIRGINIA STATE RETURN separately  because you (the husband) never lived in and did not earn income in Virginia in 2024.

It may be easier to think of it as Virginia saying, "Hey, the husband never lived here, never worked here, so we only want the wife to file a return SEPARATELY from her Husband, and since they are married, we are going to call it "Married Filing Separately". "

It has NOTHING to do with how you file your Federal return.
