State tax filing

Box 16 is your New Jersey wages, so that should be equal to what is on page one of the W-2 for box 16. That amount should typically equal the line 1 entry on your W-2 form, the federal wages. So, you should add the box 16 amounts together, but it shouldn't total more than box 1 on your W-2 form.

You don't have to file a tax return in Pennsylvania, since that is a reciprocal state to New Jersey. That means you pay tax only to the state you live in if you live in either state but work in the other state.
