Virtually nonexistent.
The US Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service offsets payments to you from IRS, Social Security, federal wages, and other sources to pay defaulted student loans, unpaid tax debts, child support, and similar obligations.
In extreme situations, you may be able to request a hardship refund, but this must be for reasons more serious than monthly living expenses or accumulated bills.
Hardship refunds may be available if:
- You are actively in bankruptcy proceedings or your student loan was discharged;
- You have repaid the student loan;
- The loan was never yours and an incorrect Social Security number resulted in the debt being collected from you;
- The loan is not enforceable; or
- Your have entered into a repayment agreement with the US Department of Education and begun repayment.
