I need a copy of my old w2 and tax return

It says that I need to pay first to get these documents.  I don't see an option to pay

After you file

TurboTax does not have a copy of your W-2—the Wage & Tax Statement—issued to you by your employer.  You should always save those documents for your own records. You could ask the employer(s) for copies or you can get a copy from Social Security (for a fee).

TO UPGRADE AND PAY TO UNLOCK THE PRIOR YEAR RETURNS ... PICK YOUR SITUATION BELOW

If you have already filed the 2016 online return  -

When you sign onto your online account and are on the Welcome Home screen,  it may open in the Tax Timeline screen.  If not, then click at the top left on MY TURBOTAX, then choose MY TAX TIMELINE. When you are on your 2016 tax timeline, under the section for SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO, click on Add a state (you will not be actually adding a state).  This will get you into your 2016 online tax return that you filed.

Click Upgrade, located near the top of your screen.  In the pop-up window, scroll down to the bottom, select TurboTax Plus, and click the Upgrade Now button. (Note - if the Plus edition is grayed out then you are already using the Plus edition or better)

To pay for the upgrade so you can access your prior year tax returns, assuming that you signed onto your 2016 account with the exact same user ID you used for the prior returns -

To pay the TurboTax online account fees by credit card, click on My Account at the top of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  On the next page, to pay by credit card, click Continue.  On the next screen just click on the Continue button.  The next screen will ask for all your credit card information so you can pay for the account.

If  you have not yet filed the 2016 online return and are working from within the 2016 online return -

To pay the TurboTax online account fees by credit card, without completing the 2016 return at this time, click on My Account at the top of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  On the next page, to pay by credit card, click Continue.  On the next screen just click on the Continue button.  The next screen will ask for all your credit card information so you can pay for the account.

If you have not started the 2016 return or you will not be using the 2016 program-

You have to start a 2016 return using the Free edition from this website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/

(If you already have the PLUS version or better chosen then you can skip the upgrade and go straight to the payment instructions)

You must enter some basic personal information in the Personal Info section of the program.  Click Upgrade, located near the top of your screen.  In the pop-up window, scroll down to the bottom, select TurboTax Plus, and click the Upgrade Now button.  If you want to include a state program with your order click on State Taxes and complete some of the state section.

To pay for the upgrade so you can access your prior year tax returns, assuming that you signed onto your 2016 account with the exact same user ID you used for the prior returns -

To pay the TurboTax online account fees by credit card, without completing the 2016 return at this time, click on My Account at the top of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  On the next page, to pay by credit card, click Continue.  On the next screen it will ask if you want Audit Defense, if you do not want this option just click on the Continue button.  The next screen will ask for all your credit card information so you can pay for the account.

TurboTax does not have a copy of the W-2.  It would have a Wage and Tax Statement worksheet that emulates a W-2 and is populated with your entries or the imported information.  The worksheet would be included in the PDF of the tax return if you downloaded the PDF to include All forms and worksheets in the tax year the return was completed.

If you cannot obtain the W-2 from your employer, then for a fee of $86 you can get a complete copy of a W-2 from the Social Security Administration - https://faq.ssa.gov/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=3836

You can get a free Wage and Income transcript from the IRS by completing a Form 4506-T (however it will not have the state information on it) - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506t.pdf

See this IRS website for transcripts - http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Get-Transcript

For a fee of $50 you can get a complete federal tax return to include copies of W-2's from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf

See this IRS Tax Topic - http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc159.html

@Critter#2   The SSA fee is actually higher:  from the ssa.gov site:
How can I get a copy of my wage and tax statements (Form W-2)?
We can give you copies or printouts of your Forms W-2 for any year from 1978 to the present. You can get free copies if you need them for a Social Security-related reason. But there is a fee of $86 per request if you need them for an unrelated reason. You can also get a transcript or copy of your Form W-2 from the Internal Revenue Service. However, state and local tax information isn’t available if you e-filed your tax return.
Some examples of non-Social Security program purposes are:

If you no longer have a copy of your 2018 W-2, you can request one from the IRS here. You will select the Wage and Income transcript for 2018.
