How long will it take for the state to withdraw money from my bank account? It's been a week since I filed my tax return.

After you file

Let me explain the direct debit process. As long as your return was accepted, funds are usually withdrawn on the payment date you specify (allow 24-48 hours for peak times and weekends).

The easiest way to find out the date you specified is to look at your Filing Instructions document (or Electronic Filing Instructions document), which prints out as part of your tax return paperwork.Your chosen tax payment date will display at the top of the page, in the Balance Due/Refund section.

As long as you filed your return on or before April 18, 2016 and you selected April 18, 2016 (or earlier) as your payment date, you won't get penalized for late payment.

If you still don't see the debit 7-10 days after your return has been accepted or the date you specified, contact your State Department of Revenue.
