Can I extend my returns now that they have been filed as the money is not there to pay federal income tax?

After you file
If you already filed your returns with the IRS and/or your state you cannot extend the returns. What most taxpayers do in your situation is to file an installment agreement (payment plan) with the IRS and/or your state to pay the taxes due over time. https://www.irs.gov/payments/payment-plans-installment-agreements
