My 2021 federal tax return hasn't come in yet, I had filed in April, and I've gotten my state refund but my federal doesn't even show up on the irs refund tracker?

I had mailed in my tax information, but I haven't gotten my federal tax return and it's been 3 months

@petercaruana2 - any reason you did not efile?  the IRS is woefully behind processing paper returns.  Figure 6-9 months from the time you mailed the return.  80% of the backlog is paper returns.

As of June 1, 2022, we had 10.5 million unprocessed individual returns which include returns received before 2022, and new tax year 2021 returns. Of these, 2 million returns require error correction or other special handling, and 8.5 million are paper returns waiting to be reviewed and processed. This work does not typically require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund and in some cases this work could take 90 to 120 days. If a correction is made to any Recovery Rebate Credit, Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit claimed on the return, the IRS will send taxpayers an explanation. If you printed and mailed your return keep waiting.   The IRS is taking 6 months or more to process  mailed returns.

I've been waiting since April 12th. Tracker shows nothing. Isn't our payment part of the e file to get it earlier? How do I get my money back for e filing?

@Kdrayb There have been lots of delays for 2021 refunds.   You did not pay an extra fee to e-file if you used online TurboTax, so no, you do not get a refund for using the software.   Your TurboTax fee would be the same whether you e-filed or mailed it in an envelope.   Only the IRS controls when your refund will be issued.   Once your e-file has been accepted, the software is done.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2021 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

I filed the 1st week of April sending in all paperwork by mail but never received it in my bank account.  What am I to do now?  Thomas J. Griffin

@gonetooregon Sadly there are still lots of delays for mailed returns.   It could take six to nine months from when you filed before they process your return.  All you can do is check the IRS refund site for information.
