IRS sent me a letter stating that I owe $, wrong amount entered in the recovery rebate form. It looks correct to me. What did I do wrong? How can I fix it?

The IRS sent me a letter stating I owe them money due to the recovery rebate form stating I entered $1000 on the last line which I did not enter, it was entered automatically by TTs calculations. IRS only made everything more confusing. I do not understand where I went wrong with entering the numbers but this is all based on stimulus payments received in April 2020 and January 2021. What can I do to understand what went wrong entering these numbers and how can I fix it? Why do I owe this amount?

In the program interview you were asked how much stimulus payment you got in advance and based on that figure the program computed the allowable credit for any missing amount you are eligible for.... but the IRS disagrees with the amount you say you got in advance so they  have adjusted the credit on the return.  Due to this adjustment you now owe so you should pay it ASAP to keep the penalties/interest from accruing further.

If you believe the IRS is wrong check your account at the IRS to see what the IRS says they sent you ... if you did not get the payments they say were sent then you can have the payment traced.
