Efiling an amended 1120S return

I efiled my 2020 1120S return & it was accepted. I discovered an error & would like to refile the amended return. I have followed the directions and TT will not permit me to efile the amended return.  I prefer to efile; is this possible with TT?

Is there a certain point in the procedure where you get stuck? Is there an error message?

Technically, TurboTax Business does not support e-filing amended returns, but I have been able to get all the way through to the transmit screen on test returns.

Yes, I can get all the way thru the amended return but when I get to the efile screen, the error message says, there is no return to efile.  I may have to mail the amended return but TT shouldn't say you can file an amended 1120S if it cannot do so.  Very frustrating.

Are you able to get to the Transmit Your Returns screen and, if so, do you see the orange Transmit Returns Now button?

Did you actually amend the return ?   Switch to the FORMS mode and look at the 1120-S page one ... is the amended return box checked ?

The first question is actually a good one since @Joyce Toste stated, "the error message says, there is no return to efile".

That could lead one to believe that, perhaps, the original return was e-filed and the amended box was not checked (i.e., the return was never amended). In that event, the program would return that error as the return had already been filed.

I have the same problem as Joyce. I can get to Select Filing Method. I select E-file and Continue. The next screen says “You have no returns eligible for e-filing”. I have chosen Amended Return from the 1st page, made my changes, saved under a new name with Amended in the name and checked the return and the Amended return box is indeed checked. I just need to know if Turbo Tax has the capability of E-filing an Amended 1120S return. And if it can do that then how exactly because I have already spent many hours trying to figure this out.

I believe the answer to this question is two-fold and sort of confounding.

The answer is "Yes, you can e-file an amended 1120-S return with TurboTax Business" but also

"No, you cannot e-file using the same file with which you originally e-filed".

In other words, you can start a new 1120-S as an amended return and e-file that return (since that file has never before been e-filed). Alternatively, you can transfer the prior year's 1120-S into the program, mark that return as amended, and e-file that return.

The problem is, basically, even though you have saved the original e-filed return under a different filename, you are still using that same file to amend the return (and that is the return you already filed, which is what TurboTax is flagging).

I started from scratch and recreated my 1120-S return and made the one correction that necessitated an Amended return in the first place.  I then saved the file with a different name.

This time I made it to the Transmit Your Returns page and pushed the orange button...and of course the return was not sent.  Here is the message I got:

"Duplicate Social Security Number-The Intuit Electronic Filing Center is currently processing a return with the same Employer Identification Number as the one in the return you just transmitted.  You cannot e-file this return again at this time."

I had already gone in and deleted all the different Amended files I had created earlier trying to find one that TurboTax would accept.  The only file left was the original one that I sent out on Sept 15 (which was accepted by the IRS within hours after I sent it).  So I'm not sure what file the Intuit Electronic Filing Center is currently processing?  Any ideas how I can get TurboTax to release my amended return that they are holding hostage?

I am not certain what they might be processing either at this point.

It is indeed confounding and possibly why TurboTax does not officially support e-filing amended returns with TurboTax Business.

Also having this issue and the IRS males it very clear not to mail in an Ammended tax return if it was originally efiled.  TurboTax needs to fix this right now.  If by mail they need much more information such as XML documents stating what changed, etc.  Help Please, so easy just to allow e-file, I redid everything and can push trhe efile button, but get the same duplicate SSN issue.  Since its ammeded, it should have a duplicate SSN

@tmorrison14

To complete an Amended return, you will have to paper file.  This cannot be done with e-filing.

To start this process, please review the instructions at the Help Article here for further assistance.

This is not a 1040   Its an 1120-S and based on IRS guidelines ammended must be efiled.  This is going to most likely force me to go to a tax preparer to do this correctly now.  This is so silly.  If I mail the IRS will not accept the mailed 1120-S ammended documents its right on the IRS publication for Corporate returns

Have you tried saving a copy of your original 1120-S and then starting a completely new 1120-S (i.e., from scratch where you enter everything) with the amended box checked?

I realize that is a huge, kludgy workaround, but at least it should save you a trip to a tax preparer's office, not to mention the expense.

Yes  I did this and it still will not allow e-file, says same SSN (EIN) in my case is being used to transmit a file already. Dead in the water.  If you check amended, you would think it would allow a retansmission, but Turbo Tax is not really design for robust corporate taxes, I most likely next season will pay an arm and a leg to get a fim to send out my fairly simple returns.  Be nice if Turbo Tax could help to answering with a Business specialist.
