Billing Notice - Why are you billing me?

I so extremely disappointed in readling my email from Intuit Turbo Tax today, that my account would be debited because notification was received from the IRS that my refund was not yet issued or has been reduced. Well...I am also super agitated and disappointed that my refund is NOT yet issued, although it was filed in April. There is absolutely NO WAY to contact the IRS and get a response about the delayed processing of refunds. The definition of insanity...doing something the same way, over and over and expecting different results; this is the IRS refund-checking process.  And, to add misery to the madness, I get your email that my account will now be debited for the tax preparation fee, with a comment that there was language in the Agreement that my account could be debited if there was an outstanding balance by 7/19. I read, and, reread the Refund Processing Service Agreement and there in NO such language. Shame on you. Hope this attempt, on your behalf, to find relief from the IRS insanity is worth losing customers.

5. THIRD PARTY SERVICES

If you sign up for the Refund Processing Service which may enable you to deduct certain fees and any applicable tax from the proceeds of your tax refund, you authorize Intuit (and its third party processor) to debit these amounts (excluding the Refund Processing Service Fee) from the bank account you identify as your Direct Deposit Bank Account in the event that you do not receive a tax refund that is sufficient to pay for them or in the event that your tax refund is delayed. Note that the Refund Processing Service fee is payable to the bank whether or not your refund is large enough to cover your TurboTax fees.  You should evaluate all Third Party Services based on your own assessment and review of their terms and conditions.

I agree intuit isn’t desperate for cash and just because the irs is dragging their feet intuit decides hey we’re greedy we can’t wait. I’ll never use TurboTax again or any online app if this is how they do business I’m done with it. Hope you’re happy intuit you’ve lost a customer who has used you a lot.

Yes we’re aware what we agreed to but I’ll never use this again good luck

Just a word of warning -

Regardless of which tax preparation software vendor you use, if you are offered the option to pay the account fees from a tax refund, they all will have caveats in the agreement where they can access your account to pay for the fees if the refund is reduced or delayed.

So do NOT use that option.  Pay for the account fees up front with a credit or debit card so this situation will Never arise.

Just pay up front then.  (You paid an extra $40 for the privilege of paying up front.  Assuming your refund is paid in 60 days and your turbotax fees were $100, that's the equivalent of a short-term loan for $100 at 240% interest.)

Are you referring to an email you received from TurboTax informing you of an upcoming auto-debit for TurboTax fees?  If so, and if you can't pay the fees now, you may be able to ask them for a deferment.

If you chose to pay your TurboTax fees out of your Federal refund, and if your Federal refund has been delayed unusually long at the IRS (or if it's been reduced), after a certain number of days TurboTax will want to be paid.  They likely started sending you emailed bills to pay.  If you don't respond by either paying or asking for a deferment, they will ultimately debit your bank account.  If you wish to ask for a deferment, you need to do so quickly.

See this FAQ that explains the process.  The first paragraph of the FAQ has a special phone number if you have a question or have a hardship and need to ask for a deferment.

Hours are 5AM-5 PM Pacific (8AM-8PM Eastern),  Mon-Fri.

If you need to ask for a deferment, you should call them as soon as possible.  Once they actually start the debit process, they say they can't stop it.

I also received this msg as well and I also read the agreement from when I filed and didn't see anything about being charged if it wasn't done within a set time period. I checked my return status on irs website and it says that it is still being processed. I filed on April 2nd, 2021. In my opinion it should not take this long to process a refund. Nor do I understand why I'm being made to pay a penalty for something that the IRS is responsible for. Why aren't they made to pay the penalty charge instead? I'm not the one that is responsible for when my refund is returned or within a set time frame. It's another way for them to make a dime at the expense of the hard working American people instead of those who should be held responsible.

What Penalty are you paying?  It just the regular Turbo Tax fees.  When the IRS finally sends your refund they won't take the fees out again.  Except the extra  $40 Refund Processing Service charge (45 in California) .

I was charged $100 fee for filing my return. And the email I received said that my account was going to be charged a fee of $36 (I believe that was the amount. I know it was around that much) on 7/9/21 if the initial payment for filing my return wasn't paid when I opted for the filing fee to be withdrawn from my return automatically. My whole question is why are we being charged for the returns being delayed when my status still says its being processed but there is no estimated date of when it will be done. It says nothing about it being reduced or altered in any way. So what is the $36 charge that I received an email about if I don't pay by 7/9/21? Is it saying that I don't have to pay the $100 filing fee but instead just the $36? I'm not understanding this at all. If I'm mistaken about it or something then I will gladly post a retraction about my original post. But the way it seems to me, I'm being charged $100 to file my taxes, and an additional $36 bc the IRS hasn't gotten my return processed in a set time.

I’ll be dammed I paid my $176 or whatever already if intuit charges me another $40 whenever the irs gets off their duff I hope the cs agent doesn’t have sensitive ears when I call it won’t be pretty. Seems everyone is getting rich off our returns, intuit, irs, idiots on their Duffs collecting checks but can we get what’s owed us?

No penalty...Just taking it from my bank account and not as agreed (from my refund). Just wish they could advocate for me to get my refund. It has been "processing" now since April. Thanks for responding
