Your post is confusing.  Who sent you a letter--the IRS or the state?  Look the page of filing instructions that will print out with your return.  What does it say there about how to pay your state tax due?

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

The post is not complete, it was from state irs and they say I owe state money, but when I filed the federal and state and I put in fir them to take money out of my bank account to pay what I owe, but federal already did so week later and I waited for state to take it out but it never did? So I left it alone because I assumed due to pandemic situation and they are busy or whatever. So I got letter from state saying I owe them this amount plus penalty and interest. So I’m left wondering why didn’t it take it out of my bank account, I called state irs and they said it’s third party which is TurboTax so I’m trying to find contact TurboTax which is hard to find because I am hard of hearing. I already paid what I owe minus penalty and interest so I want to know why TurboTax failed that they state didn’t get my money out of my bank.

TurboTax is not responsible for paying your state tax.  You have to pay attention to the way your state wants to be paid.  There are lots of states that will not do a direct debit from a bank account--yours might be one of those states.  Again---read what it said on your filing instruction page that printed out when you e-filed.

What? I’m asking why didn’t TurboTax didn’t allow my bank account to be deducted from my account for state,   which federal already did week later.  So basically they failed in that, I put in my bank account to deduct the money I owed to federal and state. As state irs said they re seeing this issues lately so I have to get hold of live person to figure out what is going on with my filing and why didn’t it deduct my bank account to pay my state I owe.

In your first question you said a letter from the IRS which means federal.  So we were confused.  The state doesn't use the same method to pay the tax due .

Check the printout or PDF of your return; look for the state cover sheet with the Turbotax logo.  If you owed tax, it will show the payment information and how/when you decided to pay.  Read the state payment instructions carefully since most states cannot be paid from within the TT system and requires additional steps.

TurboTax does not control what your state's preferences are for getting paid.  The IRS will let you enter banking information and will debit an account to pay federal tax due.    It sounds like you entered that information  for your federal tax due and took it for granted that your state would also use that information -- many states will NOT debit a bank account.   Most states want to be paid either by check or money order or they want you to pay directly on their own state tax web site.

Oh I missed a couple posts in the middle.  Turbo Tax doesn't allow anyone to debit your bank account.  They only pass your bank info to the state for the state to take it out.  If the state didn't do it you have to ask the state why and what was wrong.

In the FILE tab, after you deal with how to pay the federal return,  you then make a decision on how to pay the state ... at that point the options you have for that state are presented and the instructions on that choice are posted on the screen  AND  are part of the PDF of the return ... review that state filing instruction page to see which option you choose and how you are to make the payment.   Most state do NOT allow the direct debit to be set up thru the TT system and you must make the proper arrangements as stated in the program and the instruction page.

Save a PDF with the worksheets to see those instructions ... choose the PDF with all the worksheets.

After a return has been  efiled and accepted, it can sometimes take the  return PDF a while to update and become available at the Tax Home landing screen.   If you can't use the Download/print button at the Tax Home or the "Download/print the PDF" link in the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents", OR  if you're getting incomplete documents when you use one of those methods, here's an alternate way to print by opening the filed return back up to print at the Print Center.

NOTE:  When you open your return back up, do not make any changes in it if it's already been filed.  If you later have to amend the return, it has to start off exactly as it was when it was originally filed.

  • Log in and at the Tax Home or in the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents" for 2019, look for a link "Add a State."
  • Click on "Add a State."  (you don't really add one.  That's just to open your return back up.)
  • After the return is open, click in the left menu column on TAX TOOLS, then PRINT CENTER.
  • Then choose "Print, save, view this year's return."
  • The next screen should offer some options:  "Just my tax returns", or "include government worksheets (optional)", or "include government and TurboTax worksheets (optional.)"
  • See if one of those PDFs has what you need.  The latter has the most pages.

NOTE:  Remember all PDF tax documents and tax data files are very sensitive files, since they contain your personal ID info, financial data, and possibly bank account numbers, etc.  Be sure to store them safely and securely to guard against computer theft, hacking, etc.
