After you file

What?  You have made a huge mistake.  You should only put 2018 income on your 2018 return.  All of that other income from 2016 and 2017 should have been on returns for each specific tax year.  You cannot combine income from multiple years on the same tax return. If you get lucky the IRS will reject your return and you will be able to make corrections.

If the IRS accepts that incorrect return and processes it, you will have to file an amended return and remove the 2016 and 2017 income that you put on that return.  But you cannot amend until the accepted return has been fully processed.  Do NOT go on to the return and try to change anything now.  Leave it alone.

When you prepare an amended return, you need to complete a Form 1040X which has to be printed, signed and mailed to the IRS.  It cannot be e-filed.  You have to be able to work from your original return exactly as it appeared when you filed it in order to amend it correctly.

To file returns for 2016 and 2017:

If you need to prepare a return for 2015, 2016, or 2017 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS received the return.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

Post back for further help when you are ready to amend  the 2018 return if that is what needs to be done.  We will help.
