Amend return not received or acknowledged

I filed an Amended tax returned in July 2020 after I received my tax return. I mailed to the IRS location, which usps says its been delivered - but IRS seems not to have received it or even confirmed they received it. Its been two months now, what do I do?

After you file

The IRS has not been working on mailed returns until very recently---and an amended return could only be filed by mailing it in until late August 2020 when the IRS began to accept e-filed 2019 amended returns.   Under normal circumstances you would be able to see something about your mailed in Form 1040X after about three weeks, but that is not the case right now.  The usual 4 months for processing an amended return is going to take longer.  Sorry.

Processing Delays for Paper Tax Returns: Taxpayers should file electronically through their tax preparer, tax software provider, or IRS Free File

We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it.

Do not file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

TurboTax will not know anything about your amended return, and nor will TT know that you put your 1040X  in an envelope and took it to a mailbox.  TurboTax does not get updates on mailed  (or e-filed) returns.

When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site.

In normal times it takes up to 16 weeks or more to process an Amended 1040X return.  But these are not normal times.

Sorry the IRS has limited staff due to Covid-19.  They just started opening the mail in June that's been stacking up. Back in March the IRS closed their processing centers and stopped processing mailed tax returns.  An IRS spokesperson recently said that they have about 11 million pieces of unopened mail.  The IRS says....."We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it."  So it may take longer if you mailed in June or later.   So you have to keep waiting.

See this IRS page for the latest information

Then once they start opening the mail, After 3 weeks you can track it here,

Hello, I have a similar problem.  I mailed my amended return in June and IRS received it July 2 according to USPS.  The IRS website still says they will log receipt to the filer's account within 3 weeks.  I've been working with my US representative's office which put me in touch with an IRS taxpayer advocate.  She advised me to file elecronically (IRS added this option in Aught 2020).  I'm trying to e-file the amended return through turbotax, but it has been rejected twice.  The error code mentions a PDF attachment (???) which requires me to mail a paper submission.  Turbo Tx shows the same error code to mean a conflict with a listed dependent.  We don't have dependents on our return.  Mailing is not working.  Turbotax is not helpful.  I don't know what to do next.

Sorry you have to wait.  The IRS hasn't opened all the mail yet.  At least you know they got it.  They are opening in order received.  Do not file it again!  They will eventually get to it.  Read my post above.  Forget about the 3 weeks.  That is after they open it.

VolvoGirl, thanks so much for answering.  The woman at the IRS (taxpayer advocate) specifically told me to file again.  She said it would be MUCH faster than waiting and that it would not create any problems.  When they finally open the paper copy, she said they will see that it is already in the system.  I know -- I have trepidations about it too, but this is so frustrating.  I'm not at all confident that IRS hasn't lost or thrown away the paper copy I submitted!  (Just by contrast, the Passport Office also had a months long backup when they started processing again in June.  They post weekly updates on their website reporting the progress they are making. It doesn't seem like too much to ask )

You might have been told wrong.  We think it will cause problems.  Near the top of this IRS page it says not to file again

And see the top orange box on the IRS lookup page

Cesara, to give you a sense of how long you should wait,  I mailed my amended return June 22 and today, Oct 30, I received a messsage from the IRS Amended return status checker link that they received my return on June 29th but have not processed it yet.  So just to get that message it's been about 17 weeks.  Not sure how much longer before they actually process my amended return but now I know they have it.

Hello, I have been following this issue too and your message today is so helpful.  I mailed my amended return to Kansas City on June 18th certified mail.  The post office could not even deliver it (because mail wasn't being accepted) until July 2.  I have not received any messages yet from the IRS.  The Amended Return Status page still shows no record of my return.  Knowing that yours was delivered a few days before mine gives me hope that perhaps I'll know something next week.  It's so infuriating.  As you mentioned, it would just be a relief to know they have it.  Thank you!

I finally received my tax refund for 2019 and it took the IRS 1 weeks to process/refund it.
