We are fostering a newborn as of August 2019 and adopting in February 2020. The foster agency did not apply for a SSN until we adopt next month. Do I wait to file taxes or file and Amend?

You are able to apply for an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number (ATIN) to file your taxes this year. You would complete a Form W-7A .

You would complete Form W-7A at least 4 to 8 weeks before you will need an ATIN. Sign and date the application and mail it to:

Department of the Treasury

Internal Revenue Service

Stop 6182

Austin, TX 73301-0066

You need to attach the required attachments. See What To Include With Form W-7A for what you need to send in with the W-7A.

You would receive the ATIN in the mail in about 4 to 8 weeks.
